At Skin Silks Body Care it is important that products have ingredients with therapeutic benefits to skin and not simply smell nice. I hadn't really thought about vanilla in skin care products before. What I found was quite amazing, for not only is vanilla wonderful to add to skin care products as an antioxidant similar to Vitamin E, it has powerful beneficial effects for our personal health as well. Amazing right?
Vanilla Beans, Vanilla plantifolia is really a small climbing orchid found primarily in Mexico and Madagascar. In the process of distillery an absolute is created from fermented vanilla beans and the result is a very thick dense resin like substance which can then be added to skin care, perfumes and many other bath and body products (I typically infuse mine with Jojoba oil).
Much like Vitamin E, vanilla has an anti-oxidation effect on our cells. Oxidizers, also called free radicals, cause oxidation of our living cells and tissues and kill them. The result is often times degradation that can lead to disease.
The antioxidant property of vanilla neutralizes free radicals that have oxidized and protects the body from wear and tear, infections and even some forms of cancer. It also repairs the damage already done to the body and stimulates repair.
In essential oil perfume blends vanilla is considered a "bottom note" which anchors the middle and top notes and helps them blend and harmonize. Just one more reason I will be adding this delicious antioxidant to more of my blends.
