I'm not here to slam the cosmetic industry, I do want to let you know there are healthy alternatives out there. Looking for a brand with the words "natural" or "organic" is a good start but you must know your ingredients.
Here are a couple things in "mother nature's" cupboard that you may not be aware of.
Carrot seed oil has a natural sun protection factor (spf) of around 35-40, Red Raspberry seed oil has an spf of 30, and wheat germ oil comes in right around 20- 25.one source If you don't want to take my word for it, it is easy to purchase Carrot seed oil and Wheat germ oil at a local health food store and try it yourself. Red raspberry seed oil is a little tougher to find but can be found online.
To make your own sunscreen take these 3 oils mentioned above and warm them slowy in some melted beeswax, mix thoroughly and pour the mixture into a small glass jar or use a twist up deodorant stick (see below). Now you have yourself an all natural alternative. The beeswax holds it all together and makes the sunscreen a little more water resistant and as anyone with small children knows, this is important as they are in and out of the water a lot and you constantly have to reapply your sunscreen.
